Educating. Guiding. Inspiring.

Yong Music Centre was first established and founded in 1990 by Mrs. Yong Teck Yin as a piano school, who has a Bachelor degree in piano performance from the USA. The institution was one of the first proper piano music school in the 1990s in Brunei, and she was also one of the first Bruneian to study music and piano performance. The YMC operated for 30 years until June of 2020, after Mrs. Yong fell ill.

After a 2 year pause, the YMC restarted in September 2022 under Dr. Samuel Wong, Mrs. Yong's son, as a violin school.

YMC is dedicated to the highest quality of individual music lessons delivered, with emphasis on performance preparations and recitals.

Violin teacher-Music director

Dr. Samuel Wong

Brunei born violinist Dr. Samuel Wong began his musical training at the age of 5 where he studied piano with his mother. A year later, he started taking violin lessons at the age of 6 in local music schools around Brunei, but due to the lack of teachers and musical opportunities, he went to Singapore at the age of 14 to study under Dr. Choo Shiow-Ling and later moved to Rochester, NY at 17 to study under Jeremy Zhu at the Eastman community music school. Samuel received his Bachelor of Music in violin performance from the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College, SUNY, where he studied under Calvin Wiersma in 2014. Upon graduating, he moved to Minneapolis, MN, to pursue his master of music degree in violin performance and Suzuki pedagogy at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, where he studied under Mark Bjork. He has completed his Doctor in musical arts degree in violin performance at the University of Minnesota studying under Kyu Young Kim, formerly with Young Nam Kim. While at Purchase College, Samuel has performed with the Purchase Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Michael Adelson, David Gilbert, Guillermo Figueroa, Karina Canellakis and Ransom Wilson. He has performed in the University Symphony Orchestra at the University of Minnesota under the direction of Mark Russell Smith. Samuel has performed in masterclasses for Bayla Keyes, Ben Sayevich, Nobuko Imai and the Boston Trio. He has participated in summer music festivals/camps which have included: Eastman music horizons (Rochester, NY), Euro music festival (Germany), Apple Hill chamber music workshop (Nelson, NH), Bowdoin international music festival (Brunswick, ME), Killington music festival (Killington, VT) and Manchester music festival (Manchester, VT).

Teaching Philosophy

When it comes to private music lessons, I believe that it is an essential element to find the right teaching methodology and approach, because the classroom ratio between a teacher and students is 1:1. With the right teacher and methodology, this can help the child to enjoy their creative and musical journey.

My approach is treating all children as an individual, because I believe that each child are different and unique, with having different needs, desires, goals, and maturity in their learning. I keep my lessons engaging and interactive between student and teacher, because this is important for a teacher to understand the student not just as a violin student, but also as a person. All musical questions are always welcomed in my lessons and I encourage them to ask without the fear of making mistakes. I encourage students to always think critically and independently, and also with the confidence to be creative at the same time. My goal is for each student to eventually build up the confidence to find their own unique sound and style of playing, and to also be able to gain the confidence to learn independently.

Stage presence is very important for any performing artist, and in my lessons, I place a huge emphasis on preparing for that first impression when performing, such as the whole body posture, violin hold, and bow hold. After their posture is good, I focus a lot of violin technique on the left and right hand equally. This is a very important foundation, because with good solid technique the student is able to grasp the technical demands in their own music and this in-turn would help them learn more music quicker with better quality of tone, and intonation. Another positive reason for having a solid foundation in technique is that when the student plays any music, the musical challenges would not be a hinderance and burden for them to focus on the expressiveness of the music, and they would be able to focus on the musicality aspects, such as dynamics, mood, expression, musical phrasing, and style. This approach is similar to anyone learning a new subject, hobby or endeavor. Whether academics, sports, or performing arts, there is always a need to first learn the important steps to set a strong foundation to work with, such as counting numbers and reading ABCs to learning the correct muscular movements in sports and music.
